SURFACE WATER RESCUE AWARENESS

Keep yourself safe around calm water and support surface water rescue operations from shore without becoming a victim.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This online Surface Water Rescue Awareness course is for responders who work around calm or slow-moving water—lakes, ponds, reservoirs, marinas, canals, retention basins—but are not in-water rescuers.

The mission: keep you off the bottom, keep your crew out of trouble, and help you support surface water rescue operations from safe ground.

You'll get straight talk on hazards, victim behavior, PPE, and low-risk rescue options from shore. This is awareness-only: no in-water skills, no "now you're a rescuer" fantasy.

Content follows current industry best practices and aligns with the awareness intent of NFPA 1006 and NFPA 2500 for surface water and flood rescue—translated into plain language and practical decision-making.

Recognize surface water hazards: sudden drop-offs, cold water, entrapment, docks, boats, and night operations
Identify appropriate PPE for shore-based operations (PFDs, helmets, lighting, visibility)
Apply low-risk rescue priorities: talk, reach, throw, row (and why "go" isn't for awareness level)
Support operations within ICS: zones, bystander control, helping with lookouts and access/egress
Recognize when conditions or victim location demand trained operations/technician-level teams and specialized platforms
Surface water rescue training - swimmer in whitewater

KEY TOPICS

Surface water risk profile vs. rivers/floods
Common incident types and victim behavior
